Why I Love My Job

I was raised by highly ethical parents who taught us kids to obey the “Golden Rule.” Halbert Hargrove is managed by people who believe in doing what’s best for the client 100% of the time and following the rules. I love my job because I get to help people solve problems and help make life better. My teammates and clients are wonderful people and my children have noticed how much Dad loves his job.

As a Regional Director with Halbert Hargrove’s Scottsdale office, Pat ensures that his team successfully guides clients towards reaching their financial objectives. “I take great satisfaction in helping others achieve their dreams and closely following the global markets,” he says. “I feel truly blessed in working with highly professional, ethical and kind teammates to improve our clients’ financial futures—brainstorming with them to develop creative solutions to clients’ challenges. I love what I do and look forward to going to the office each day.”

Pat has more than two decades of experience in private and institutional investing. Before joining HH in 2012, he was a Regional Director for AQR Capital Management in Scottsdale, marketing the firm’s alternative investment mutual funds to large advisory teams at brokerage firms in the Western U.S. Prior to AQR, he served high net worth clients as a principal with a niche financial advisory firm in Phoenix. Pat has worked at O’Shaughnessy Asset Management, JPMorgan Asset Management, and Strong Capital Management, and was a founding principal at Undiscovered Managers, LLC.

Prior to his current career as an advisor, Pat served for four years as a United States Naval Officer. He participated in two six-month deployments to the Persian Gulf on the USS Halsey (CG 23) in the early 1990s. He has worked and travelled extensively in Asia and the Middle East.

He earned his B.A. in Business (Marketing) in 1990 from the University of Notre Dame, which he attended on a Naval ROTC Scholarship. Pat was awarded the ACCREDITED INVESTMENT FIDUCIARY™ designation by the University of Pittsburgh-affiliated Center for Fiduciary Studies.

He currently serves as a Lector at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church, a member of Knights of Columbus Council 11116 and is a member of the Catholic Community Foundation’s Professional Advisor Board in Phoenix. He enjoys helping others whenever possible, volunteering at the Andre House of Phoenix and Feed My Starving Children among others.

Pat is married to his college sweetheart Lenore. Together, they’re happily raising Taylor, Brennan, and Karina.

Fun Fact

I can barely draw a stick man today. But as a child, I won a poster-drawing contest for the NBA All-Star Game in Milwaukee. On the Saturday before the game, my parents and I got to meet Julius “Doctor J” Erving. I still remember that day like it was yesterday.

Methodology

CNBC enlisted data provider AccuPoint Solutions to assist with the ranking of registered investment advisors for this year’s FA 100 list.

The methodology consisted of first analyzing a variety of core data points from AccuPoint Solutions’ proprietary database of registered investment advisors. This analysis started with an initial list of 40,646 RIA firms from the Securities and Exchange Commission regulatory database. Through a process, the list was eventually cut to 812 RIAs with those firms meeting CNBC’s proprietary criteria.

CNBC staff sent an extensive email survey to all those firms that met the initial criteria to gather more details. In turn, those advisory firms filled out a comprehensive application in regard to their practice. The CNBC team verified that data with those firms and with the SEC regulatory database. AccuPoint once again applied CNBC’s proprietary weighted categories to further refine and rank the firms, ultimately creating the list of the top 100 firms.

The primary data points used in the analysis were reviewed, either as a minimum baseline or within a range, eliminating those firms that did not meet CNBC’s requirements. Once the initial list was compiled, weightings were also applied accordingly. These data points included:

Advisory firm’s regulatory/compliance record. (editor’s note: Each advisory firm’s CRD number was checked for validity. Any firm that had a disclosure on its SEC ADV was automatically disqualified from the ranking)
Number of years in the business.
Number of certified financial planners.
Number of employees.
Number of investment advisors registered with the firm.
The ratio of investment advisors to total number of employees.
Total assets under management.
Percentage of discretionary assets under management.
Total accounts under management.
Number of states where the RIA is registered.
Country of domicile.
